Sagres in Algarve: The old Fortress
The fortress of Sagres is a monument on the southwestern edge of Europe “where the land ends and the sea begins” built on a huge rock that extends into the sea.
It was strategically created here to allow the control of maritime navigation in the Atlantic-Mediterranean axis, by Infante D. Henrique, that was a central figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire and the 15th-century European maritime discoveries and maritime expansion.

Little remains of the wall were ordered to build by D. Henrique, since the fortress was rebuilt in the 16th century and the second half of the 18th century, having already lost its military function in the 20th century.

Currently, within the wall, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça and a stone representation of the compass rose to stand out. There are also several areas where you can hear and even see and hear the waves under the rocks.
It is an interesting place when visiting this part of the Algarve and with great importance in our history and Portuguese discoveries.
