Ronda, the Andalusian city that is known for its bridge

Ronda, in the heart of Andalusia, is a pearl divided by a huge gorge, the “Canhão de El Tajo” through which the Guadalevín river flows and joined by a monumental bridge. When I visited Ronda, I only had the bridge as a reference, but the bridge and its landscape is only a tiny part of what Ronda as to offer and I was quite surprised.

We visited the city on a trip through Andalusia and its situated in the province of Malaga, about 1h30 drive from Seville. The city is divided by the gorge, which separates the oldest part from the most modern part of the city. The oldest area still retains its historic charm, mainly within the walls of the old Moorish city.

The biggest attraction and the one that led us to come back several times to take pictures and to admire at the sunset is Puente Nuevo, which joins the city built on the huge gorge.

The bridge dates from the 18th century, it is called new bridge, because there is an old bridge that connects the two parts of the city, but much less spectacular. It is 100 meters high and has several places from which we can see it and some viewpoints. Get lost in the city paths and look for the trail that takes you to the base of the bridge, where there is a small waterfall and where you can feel the enormous size and construction that this bridge is.

The Plaza de Toros is another point of interest in the city, but I ended up not entering because it is similar to those already visited in Spain.

In the old part of the city, in addition to the churches, in the route along the walls, it is also mentioned in the guides that both the Mondragón Palace and La Casa del Rey Moro should be visited. We chose to visit  the “Casa del Rey Moro” because the possibility of going down to the bottom of the cliff and having a different view of the Bridge.

But, contrary to what the name indicates, the house is not accessible since it is abandoned, but we visit the garden and the descent to “La Mina”, about 60 meters, made inside the escarpment up to the river.

How to arrive

To get to Ronda you have to go by car or bus. The nearest airport is Seville, which has domestic and international flights. From Seville to Ronda the journey takes 1h30.

The level of safety did not seem to us to be a problem either, since at no time do we feel insecure on every street.

How long time is necessary to visit the city

We stayed only one day and it was enough to get to know the city and its monuments. This can all be visited on foot and by the way this will be the fastest method to get to know the oldest part of the city.

The occupancy rate of the city is always very high, being even higher in the spring – summer months, which will be the most pleasant time to visit.

Here to eat

The whole area of ​​the new part of the city, next to the bridge, is full of restaurants and bars for all tastes. From the most traditional Spanish food to the pizzerias it is easy to find a restaurant that will suit your taste.
