Alesund is located in western Norway and is a city known for its unique architecture and stunning landscapes. It also allows you to explore some of the most beautiful Norwegian fjords.

Norway and its fjords have always been a desired destination for us. This year the opportunity arose to take a cruise through the Norwegian fjords and it is based on this experience that we write these articles.

Norway is located in the northern region of Europe and is a country of incomparable beauty, known for its spectacular landscape, its majestic fjords and its people’s deep connection with nature. Enjoying nature is something written into the laws and constitution of the country itself. It is a Scandinavian nation that occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, sharing borders with Sweden, Finland and Russia. With a relatively small population concerning its vast territory, Norway offers an atmosphere of tranquillity and untouched space that makes it a truly unique travel destination.

If you are looking for outdoor adventures and a rich culture, Norway is the perfect destination. In this article, we explore a small village in one of the best-known fjords.

Norway is not a country in the European Union but belongs to the Schengen area. Therefore, for citizens of the Schengen area, it is only necessary to present a valid citizen card or passport. No visa is required.

Norway’s currency is the Norwegian krone. During the days I was in Norway I didn’t exchange money or use cash since bank cards are used a lot in Norway. To avoid commissions we use the Revolut card.

Norway’s fjords are one of the most spectacular and iconic natural settings in the world. These unique formations are characteristic of the Norwegian landscape and are widely recognized for their natural and imposing beauty. Here is some additional information about the fjords:

Fjords are deep, narrow valleys that extend from the sea and are surrounded by high mountains or cliffs. They are formed by the retreat of ice that existed millions of years ago when the ice carved deep valleys in the mountains. The sea flooded the valleys when the ice retreated, creating the fjords we see today. Some, due to their depth, are navigable, even for huge cruise ships.

Norway’s fjords stretch along the entire west coast of the country, forming a spectacular landscape that stretches for more than 1,100 kilometres. Some of the most famous and visited fjords are Geirangerfjord, Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord and Nærøyfjord.

Norwegian fjords are famous for their natural beauty that takes your breath away. This was the main reason that led us to cruise along its coast. The mountain walls surrounding the fjords are often covered in lush green vegetation during the summer and covered in snow in the winter, creating a stunning contrast to the deep, calm waters of the fjords.

Many fjords feature spectacular waterfalls that plunge into the water from the mountains. The Seven Sisters waterfall on the Geirangerfjord is a famous example. These waterfalls, the green vegetation and the calm water of the fjords complete the beauty and grandeur of the entire space that surrounds us.

Several Norwegian fjords, including the mentioned Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord, are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to their exceptional natural and cultural importance. This further highlights the importance and beauty of these natural wonders.

The fjords are home to rich marine life, including a variety of fish species and marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. Observing wildlife while adventuring through the fjords is a unique experience. However, during our trip, we had no such luck.

Alesund is a port city located in the northwest region of Norway. The great milestone in the city’s history was the catastrophic fire that destroyed it in January 1904. The fire started in a canning factory and quickly spread, destroying most of the city, since the buildings were all made of wood.

After the fire, the reconstruction of Alesund was an ambitious project that resulted in the transformation of the city under the influence of Art Nouveau. Even today, the historic and central part of the city preserves ornate and elaborate buildings with some unique details that have made it internationally famous as a notable example of Art Nouveau architecture.

In addition to its architectural history, Alesund is known for its relationship with the sea as it is an important fishing and trading port and plays an important role in the region’s economy.

During World War II, in 1940, Norway was invaded by Nazi Germany. Alesund, like many other Norwegian cities, was also occupied by the Nazis and signs of those times can still be found, such as the bunker on Mount Aksla.

The city centre is known for its Art Nouveau architecture, the result of reconstruction after the devastating fire of 1904. In addition to the fascinating details of the buildings, enjoy the streets and shops in this small town.

From the centre, you can climb the stairs to Mount Aksla and observe the stunning views of the city from the Fjellstua viewpoint. From this viewpoint, we have a view of the city and the entire archipelago surrounded by the majestic Sunnmore Alps. The various islands are interconnected by road tunnels under the sea, instead of bridges, so we are left with the perception that there is a certain isolation that is not real.

At this point, in addition to the viewpoint with a cafe, you can walk a little through the forest and observe the ruins of the old bunkers.

It is an aquarium with a variety of local marine life and other species from around the world. It offers the opportunity for families and marine life enthusiasts to get to know these species.

It is a building built in 1909 in the Romanesque style by architect Sverre Knudsen, replacing the city’s old church that was destroyed during the fire of 1904.

Alesund offers countless activities. From visits to the various islands to cruises through the fjords or even walks along the various trails that take you to spectacular panoramic views.

Alesund is accessible via its airport, which receives regional flights; by road via the E39 road, which connects Alesund to Norway’s two main cities; by boat, as it is an important port for cruises that visit the fjords and travel along the coast of Norway.

The time you can best enjoy Alesund, its hiking trails and landscapes, will be during the summer. The weather in northern Europe tends to be very uninviting for walks during the winter.
