Close to the village of Piódão, in the Açor mountains in Portugal, the small schist village of Foz d’Égua, has its water mirror as the centrepiece and ex-libris of this beautiful area.

Located at the junction of the Piódão stream and Chãs d’Égua stream with the schist houses as a backdrop you find the river beach of Foz d’Égua.

Its proximity to other tourist attractions such as Piodão and the Estrela mountain, makes a visit to this village mandatory when travelling to this region of Portugal. It’s an area that is worth a visit for a few hours or, if you can, longer in one of the many schist houses to relax and fully enjoy the calm and serene atmosphere of a mountain village.

Piódão is located just 5 miles away by mountain road and is only a few miles from the city of Covilhã or Fundão.

Both the village of  Foz d’Égua and the nearby village of  Chãs d’Égua are characterized by their rural mountain appearance, with typical schist houses on terraces and surrounded by almost wild nature.

In Foz d’Égua, be sure to see the pedestrian bridge (which was awaiting repair at the time of our visit), climb to the small chapel and walk along the walking trails there.

When visit the Foz d’Égua village

We visited during the winter and even then it was quite busy. However, being winter, the gate that makes the watercourse form a mirror of water was removed. The beauty of the place was in all its splendour, as the greenery and clouds touching the mountains around it gave a unique shine to this place.

If you want to visit this place for a walk and to enjoy the natural pool, we suggest that visit the village in the summer, always bearing in mind that parking and the place are small.

How to arrive at Foz d’Égua

Foz d’Égua is located a 5miles from Piodão by th CM1134 road.

From Covilhã are 40 miles by the IC6 and CM1134 road.

    where to stay

In Foz d’Égua there is no accommodation so the nearest village with more accommodation is Piódão. In this village, it is an excellent opportunity to stay in a schist house and thus experience the rurality of this place. You can, however, choose the Inatel Foundation Hotel, completely made of schist, located in front of the Piódão village.

Inatel Piódão: Hotel with an exceptional location.
Casa da Padaria: It is a welcoming space with typical village decor.
Story Studio Piódão: A fully decorated holiday home made of schist.

    Pedestrian Routes

In this area, the entire road route offers magnificent views. However, if you follow the pedestrian paths through the mountain, following the watercourses, you will experience another type of beauty.

The most popular is the PR3 AGN de Foz d’égua a Piódão with a length of 4 miles. Find out more about Piódão HERE.
