Cádiz is a stunning old city with a vibrant historical centre, linked to the Romans, Phoenicians, Arabs, and Christians, located on a peninsula. It is also a holiday destination with wonderful and extensive beaches.
Despite being beautiful and very rich, the historic centre of Cádiz is not too big and can be visited on foot. Many of the most important tourist attractions are within walking distance, allowing a visit to the city in one day.

On our tour of Cádiz, we will discover the main places of interest in this city. On this visit, we chose to stay in Santi Petri, Chiclana de la Frontera, a beach area and tourist resort located on the outskirts of the city.

Cádiz Cathedral
This is the most famous monument in Cádiz and can be seen from anywhere in the old town. Its construction took a century to complete and therefore it mixes various architectural styles, such as Baroque and Neoclassical.
The golden dome and interior are superb and definitely worth a visit. Don’t forget to go up to the bell tower (Torre de Poniente), which is a fantastic viewpoint over the city of Cádiz.
San Sebastian Castle
Castillo de San Sebastian is located on a small island connected by a narrow road that crosses the sand. This promenade named Fernando Quinones in some parts is almost at sea level and when there is swell it passes over the promenade.
The castle offers a different perspective of the city. Within its walls, when open, some exhibitions can be observed.
The construction of the castle began when sailors infected by the plague built a small hermitage there. Then came a watchtower, given its strategic location, and later, in 1706, the castle was built in order to protect and strengthen the city’s defences.

Between the Cathedral and the Castle, walk along Avenue Campo del Sur right by the sea and enjoy all the surroundings of this wonderful city.
La Caleta Beach
On the opposite side of the Castle and on the edge of the beach it´s the Santa Catalina Castle.
It is the beach located in front of the castle and protected by the jetty where Fernando Quinones walk is located. It is perfect for swimming and for cooling off as the swell is always very calm. However, in the middle of summer, it is normal to be crowded given its location in the city and its size.

This castle with the appearance of a fortress is located on the sand next to the beach of La Caleta. In earlier times it was a prison and is currently a cultural space. It is a place to observe the beach and São Sebastião Castle on the other side.
The Barios La Viña e Pópulo
The oldest part of Cádiz retains its original design in its neighbourhoods, where the narrow streets and old buildings, although well-kept, are a mirror of this reality. These two neighbourhoods occupy this part of the city and are certainly the best known for the monuments that exist there. In them, we can find the parish of Santa Cruz, the Santiago Apostal Church, the Admiral’s house or the city’s own cathedral.
In these neighbourhoods, we find many alleys full of good bars and restaurants where we can rest and refresh ourselves.
Sancti Petri and La Barrosa Beach
Cádiz, despite being next to the beach, has few beaches with extensive sand. However, a short distance away and after passing the area of the estuary and its salt flats, we find the village of Sancti Petri with all its tourist and summer area, next to La Barrosa Beach.
Here there are extensive beaches and a calm sea, surrounded by streets with beach bars, or areas for walking within pine forests. There are also many resorts and hotels that await you in Sancti Petri. In the low season, it is a very calm and pleasant area.
