Setenil de las Bodegas is a village near Ronda where some houses and streets are located under the mountain rock.

This Andalusian village, with just over 3000 inhabitants, has the unique characteristic of using mountain rocks to serve as a roof and shade for its houses and streets. The village was built taking advantage of the erosion of the rock caused by the river and taking advantage of it to be able to build their houses.

The main street

It is a very different place and deserves a visit, being part of the itineraries of those who visit Ronda and the Pueblos Blancos, due to its proximity. It is also close to Seville, which is about 120km away.

In summer and even in the spring, the temperatures in the city are very high and the existence of the shadows of the rock meant that the houses were built taking advantage of this for thermal control. In addition to the roof, the rock serves as walls in some houses. The name given to this type of construction is “Cuevas del sol” sun and shadow pits.

In Setenil there are several places to visit, however, our visit was made in passing and so we only had time to observe the small houses embedded in each other and in the stones of the rocky escarpment. The village was built on a slope taking advantage of the hillside, where on the summit is the Castle of Setenil.

Main Street

However, if you have time, visit the castle and enjoy the view it has over the village and the river that crosses it. Also, enjoy the comfort of the shade of the rock on the esplanades of the cafes and restaurants that are on the main street.

Visit also, Ronda.
