Troia

Troia is part of a peninsula with the same name and is about 11miles long, in front of the city of Setúbal, next to the Sado Estuary, in the Alentejo region, Portugal. In the past, there was an important fish salting complex here. Currently, the beaches of fine sand and the transparent sea with the Arrabida Hill in the background are its main attractions. It is a tourist area with several hotels, resorts, a marina, golf and a casino. At the entrance to the peninsula is the small village of Comporta.

 Dolphins

In the Sado estuary, there is a colony of dolphins throughout the year. For this reason, it is very likely that you will be able to observe them. You might get that lucky from the beach, but there are more guarantees of being able to do so through the various companies that offer guided tours and leave from the marina in Troia.

Activities in Troia

Comporta

Comporta is a small village on the way to Troia. It was once one of the largest agricultural properties in Portugal and the shops and many restaurants there were built-in old buildings of the homestead. It’s a small village that combines the hippie type of those who are taking a tour of the Alentejo with the wealthy and famous chic style that choose both Comporta and Tróia for their holidays. Recently it was on the beaches between Comporta and Troia that Madonna went horseback riding.

Comporta beach, next to the Rice Museum is the most famous. It has a walkway to the beach and a paid car park. Then there are other beaches among the rice fields and pine forests, such as Carvalhal beach or Pego Beach, but they are more difficult to access.

In our tour we chose to go to the beach in Troia since Comporta Beach was very busy even in the morning. We went back to Comporta for lunch due to the variety and quantity of restaurants in the center of the small village. We chose the Central Comporta Restaurant due to Google Maps reviews and we liked it.

Carrasqueira Stilt Pier

The Stilt Pier was built by hand to allow boat access at low tide. Thus was born a small pier with pathways and small supports suspended on stilts on top of the marshy land.

Carrasqueira is a small fishing village where you can see rice plantations.

I confess that I expected more due to the numerous recommendations.

Where to sleep in Troia or Comporta?

Troia is a place with many resorts and large hotels. Variety is not the issue. In Comporta, the accommodation will be more rural. It is best to make a reservation well in advance as they quickly sell out. See the available accommodations on Booking on the map below.
