This Pedestrian trail runs along the rocky coast between the Arade River, in the Ferragudo area, next to Portimão City and Carvoeiro in Algarve. The Caminho dos Promontários follows the contour of the coast and follows some of the recesses and headlands.
During this pedestrian route, it is possible to admire the natural beauty of the Algarve coast, with its steep cliffs and beaches with crystal clear waters. The landscape is imposing during sunset when the colours of the sky and the sea blend in a harmony of golden and orange tones.
Along the route are several rest areas where hikers can relax and enjoy the view. There are also some stairs and narrow paths that require attention, but which provide an even more adventurous atmosphere to the route.
On the Ferragudo side, Ponta do Altar extends 260 meters into the sea, delimiting the mouth of the Arade to the east. Here you can also rest and enjoy the small beach of Pintadinho and the nearby lighthouse.
The cliffs are carved into a limestone mass that is easily sculpted by fresh and salt water, creating what is known as a karst landscape. Along the entire route, there are caves and sinkholes, forms of erosion resulting from the underground circulation of fresh water.
