La Manga del Mar Menor in Múrcia – South Spain

Also know as La Manga is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula 44 miles northeast of the city of Murcia and near the city of Cartagena.

This was the place of our choice for a recent holiday in southern Spain with calm and warm waters. It is a very characteristic destination as it is a 13 miles long sandy line in the Mediterranean, with a  very small width that extends from Cabo de Palos to the Salinas Natural Park in San Pedro del Pinatar, and in the end it forms another sea, the Mar Menor, with no undulation and shallow depth.

With “two seas” available you can choose which beach to go to. When we visited La Manga the Mediterranean water was very hot indeed, very clear water with little ripple and plenty of room to extend the towel on the extensive Mediterranean-facing sandy beach. In the Mar Menor, which in the end is a huge lagoon also the water is super clear and realy hot.

What seemed most negative to me is that the whole of La Manga, which could be a very unique place, has turned into a jumble of buildings, houses and marinas, something very similar to large cities off the Spanish coast. However, if you like fun places, clubs and pubs this is the ideal place.

Near La Manga there is a protected mountain area that reaches the sea, making small beaches with gravel. However there is an exception in Calblanque Regional Park. The access to this beach called Playa de Calblanque is made by bus, which takes you from a car park near the Autovia de La Manga and not have beach support and not have many people. The beach lying hidden between the Mediterranean and the rocky hills of the Regional Park.

This whole coast area between Cartagena and La Manga is made with small beaches. We visited the small beach of Cala del Barco, near the La Manga Club resort and despite being a rocky beach the water are warm and ideal for snorkeling due to the little ripple and the clarity of the water.

It the ideal place to also visit the Murcia or Cartagena.

There is a lot on offer even inside La Manga, but we opted for a private condominium accommodation very close to La Manga and it was a very quiet place with playground, swimming pools, restaurants and even in midsummer it didn’t feel like it was super full.

For those who like hiking there are many marked routes to go around the hills that approach La Manga.
