✨ Why Visit Toledo, Spain?
Toledo is a true journey back in time. Located in central Spain, this medieval city is famous for its unique blend of Christian, Muslim and Jewish heritage, earning it the nickname “The City of Three Cultures.” Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved in Europe.

The city is also famous for its handcrafted swords. Nowadays, these swords are mainly sold as souvenirs and can be found in many local gift shops. Toledo is also the city of El Greco, the Greek painter who lived here and became one of its most celebrated figures. Interestingly, Toledo was once the capital of Spain before Madrid and is now the capital of the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha.

Thanks to its proximity to Madrid, Toledo is perfect for a day trip, but staying overnight allows you to experience the city at a slower pace, especially in the evening when the streets become quieter and more atmospheric.

We chose a three-day trip and stayed within Toledo’s historic centre. This allowed us to explore at a relaxed pace several of the city’s museums, cathedrals and churches.
🚆 How to Get to Toledo from Madrid
Getting to Toledo is easy and convenient, especially if you’re already visiting Madrid.
- High-speed train (AVE): The fastest option. Trains leave from Madrid Atocha and reach Toledo in around 30 minutes.
- By car: The drive takes about 1 hour from Madrid via the A-42 motorway.
- Organised tours: Many companies offer guided day trips with transport included.
Espanha está muito bem interligada pelas linhas de alta velocidade. No nosso caso, apanhamos o comboio AVE em Sevilha com destino a Madrid. O comboio é muito confortável e a viagem rápida. O preço também é bastante aceitável.
📌 TIP: Book train tickets in advance, particularly on weekends and holidays.

🏰 What to See in Toledo: Must-Visit Attractions
Our three-day trip allowed us to stroll calmly through the historic centre of the city, without the need to create a specific itinerary of points of interest. The old town is not very large, which makes it easy to walk from monument to monument depending on your interests.
The only monument for which we made an online reservation was the Toledo Cathedral. It is undoubtedly the most visited attraction and the one most likely to have long queues.
🎯 Toledo Cathedral
It is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe. La Primada has a vast and richly detailed interior, featuring works by El Greco. Several rooms can be visited, all of them equally impressive. The cathedral also boasts one of the most elaborately crafted and beautiful altarpieces we have ever seen.
Due to its size and the amount of detail, this is a monument that will easily take up a significant amount of time to visit. We strongly recommend booking tickets online to avoid queues. Next to the cathedral is Plaza del Ayuntamiento, surrounded by characteristic buildings typical of Toledo.

🛡️ Alcázar of Toledo
The Alcázar is the fortress that dominates the city and is clearly visible when approaching the walls from the Tagus River side. Formerly a castle, it is now a palace that houses the Army Museum as well as the city library.
Allow plenty of time for your visit, as the interior is quite large. You can also explore its gardens and enjoy the viewpoint overlooking the Tagus River. Across the river, you can spot two impressive buildings: the Infantry Academy and San Servando Castle, which today operates as a hostel.

Plaza Zocodover
At the top of the hill where Toledo is located, near the Alcázar, lies Plaza Zocodover. It is the beating heart of Toledo’s old town. From here, you can head in all main directions, and this is where the busiest streets of the city are found.
At one of the entrances to the square stands a monument to Miguel de Cervantes, the Spanish writer and author of Don Quixote de la Mancha.

✡️ Jewish Quarter
The historic centre is filled with narrow streets, and the Jewish Quarter is one of the most characteristic areas of Toledo. Its very narrow streets and distinctive architecture give this part of the city a unique atmosphere.
⛪ Monestery of San Juan de los Reyes
This former monastery was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs and offers a calmer, more relaxed visit. Its cloister is peaceful and beautifully preserved, making it one of Toledo’s many remarkable religious monuments.
Highlights include the intricately carved wooden ceiling and the climb to the highest point of the church, from where you can admire its full architectural splendour.

🌉 Puente de Alcántara
One of the most beautiful bridges crossing the river. From here, you can see the fortified city and enjoy one of the best spots to photograph Toledo.

The Gates of Toledo (Puertas de Toledo)
Toledo is a fortified city, surrounded by walls that have stood the test of time. Entering the historic centre means passing through one of its medieval gates.
There are several notable gates worth visiting, such as Puerta del Cambrón, Puerta de Bisagra and Puerta de Alcántara.

Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz
After entering through Puerta de Bisagra and heading towards the historic centre, you pass another gate, Puerta de Valmardón. Nearby stands one of Toledo’s most visited mosques.
The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz is one of the remaining traces of Toledo’s ancient civilisations and its historical importance over the centuries. Dating back to the year 999, it is a monument of great historical significance.

Synagoga of Santa María la Blanca
Another synagogue with deep historical roots within the Jewish Quarter. Its exterior is very plain and could easily go unnoticed, but the interior is absolutely worth visiting.
This coexistence of historical monuments from different cultures perfectly symbolises how diverse communities once lived together within the city.
Pozo de los Deseos (Well of Wishes)
This is one of those places that might go unnoticed if it weren’t for the internet. The Well of Wishes is a traditional souvenir shop, but in its basement lies an ancient well with crystal-clear water.
Visitors can go inside, take photos and buy a small souvenir from Toledo.

Mosque of Tornerías
This mosque, with free entrance, was recently restored and includes archaeological excavations. Inside, it is possible to see evidence of a fire that once led to the destruction of the mosque in the past.

El Grego Museum
This is one of the places with the largest collection related to El Greco, an artist deeply respected in Toledo and central to its history. It is also one of the most visited museums in the city.
🍷 Where to Eat in Toledo: Local Food & Traditions
Toledo’s gastronomy is quite diverse. However, due to its reputation, it is easy to find a wide range of traditional flavours, Mediterranean cuisine and dishes from around the world throughout its streets. The restaurants listed below are among the most famous, but our attempts to visit and try them always failed due to long queues and because we didn’t have a reservation.
🍽️ Recommended restaurants:
- Restaurante Adolfo – Traditional cuisine with a refined touch.
- La Abadía – Rustic atmosphere and excellent local dishes.
- Venta de Aires – The oldest restaurant in Toledo, dating back to 1891.
🧀 Typical dishes to try:
- Stewed partridge
- Carcamusas (meat stew with tomato)
- Manchego cheese
- Toledo marzipan, famous throughout Spain

🏨 Where to Stay in Toledo
Toledo offers a wide range of accommodation options, from places within its historic centre to others located outside the walled area. We stayed at Cervantes 5 Collection, which offers spectacular apartments very close to Plaza de Zocodover.
💡 Practical Tips for Visiting Toledo
- Wear comfortable shoes – the streets are steep and cobbled.
- In summer, avoid walking during the hottest hours of the day.
- Bring water, especially in warm weather.
- Download an offline map or audio guide.
- Visit the Mirador del Valle at sunset for the best panoramic view of Toledo.
