Where is the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort located?
Sierra Nevada in Spain is one of the most popular ski resorts in the country, attracting visitors from all over Europe. It is located in southern Spain, in the Andalusia region, within the Sierra Nevada National Park. This is also home to the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, Mulhacén, standing at 3,479 metres.
The ski resort is officially called Sierra Nevada Ski & Mountain Resort and is well known for combining excellent snow conditions with a high number of sunny days—something quite rare among European ski destinations.
Another unique feature is its proximity to the coast. It’s entirely possible to go skiing and take a dip in the Mediterranean on the same day. Thanks to its high altitude, Sierra Nevada also offers some of the best snow quality in Spain.
How to Get to Sierra Nevada (Practical Guide)

🚗 By car (our choise)
If you stay in Granada, you’ll be just 20 miles from the resort.
Although the distance from Granada to Sierra Nevada is short, travel time can vary depending on traffic and road conditions. On average, it takes between 40 and 45 minutes. The road is in good condition, but it is a mountain route.
During winter, it’s essential to:
- Check road conditions before
- Confirm whether snow chains are required (and carry them if needed)
- Monitor weather conditions in the Sierra Nevada
Our drive up was smooth, but in heavy snowfall conditions, extra caution is definitely needed.
🚌 By Bus
There is a direct bus connection from Granada to Pradollano, in the ski resort, making it a great option if you prefer not to drive or want to avoid parking costs.
👉 Tip: Travel early, especially during peak season (December to March).
Here you can find the bus timetable and buy tickets.

Where to Park in Sierra Nevada?
Parking in Sierra Nevada is limited. There are at least three main car parks, including one covered option. Street parking is reserved for residents, and some buildings and hotels offer underground parking.
When we visited, we entered through the mid-zone and parked along the access road. The covered car park was full, and other parking areas were limited due to heavy snow accumulation.

On the Sierra Nevada resort website, it’s possible to check more information about the car parks and the occupancy rate.
The best place to park is Plaza Andalucía Car Park because:
- It is covered
- It’s close to the main access points
- It’s safer in snowy conditions, preventing your car from getting stuck
Average price:
- 20€ to 25€ per day (depending on the season)
Understanding the Resort: Lower, mid and Upper Areas
One of our main questions was understanding the different “zones” of Sierra Nevada, as these appear when booking accommodation and navigating the resort.
Because the resort is built on a mountainside, it is divided into three main areas:
Lower Area – Pradollano (aprox. 2.100 m)
Pradollano is the main hub of the Sierra Nevada ski resort and where most activities begin. Here you’ll find:
- Hotels and apartments
- Shops
- Restaurants
- Main gondolas and ski lifts
- Ticket offices and machines
- Ski schools
This is where we headed when we arrived.
Mid and Upper Village Areas
These are primarily residential areas with stunning views, featuring houses and apartment rentals. You’ll also find outdoor parking here.

From the upper area, you can access lifts to higher slopes or take a gondola down to Pradollano.
These “zones” also apply to the ski slopes themselves. For beginners, the most suitable area is the mid-zone—Borreguiles.
Mid-Resort Area – Borreguiles
Borreguiles is the heart of the ski slopes and one of the busiest areas of the resort.
This is where the real snow experience begins. Accessible by gondola from Pradollano, it opens up to breathtaking panoramic mountain views.
Here you’ll find:
- Green and blue slopes
- Learning areas
- Panoramic restaurants
For beginners, this is the best place to start.

Upper Area (up to 3,300 metres)
This is the highest part of the resort, accessible via lifts. We didn’t visit this area as it is more suited for experienced skiers.
It offers:
- Incredible panoramic views
- More technical slopes
- Fewer area (less crowded due to difficulty level)
What is a Ski Pass (Forfait) and How Much Does It Cost?
If you’re wondering what a ski pass (forfait) is, here’s a simple explanation.
A ski pass allows you to:
- Use ski lift
- Access chairlift
- Enter the slopes
Without it, you can still visit the resort, enjoy restaurants, and play in the snow—but you won’t be able to ski.

Ski pass prices in Sierra Nevada
Prices vary depending on:
- Season (high or low)
- Age
- Number of days
- Full-day or half-day access
We recommend buying your ski pass online via the official website to avoid long queues in the morning.
If the resort closes due to weather conditions, refunds are typically issued.
👉 Note: Even with an online purchase, you’ll need to collect your physical pass from a machine at the resort.

Where to Rent Equipment in Sierra Nevada?
If you don’t have your own ski or snowboard gear, renting is easy. You can rent equipment either in Granada or directly in Pradollano.
In Sierra Nevada, there are many rental shops. Prices are similar, with slight variations depending on equipment quality.
We rented:
- Skis
- Boots
- Poles (adults only)
- Helmets
Since it was our first time skiing, we also booked a lesson with an instructor—and it made a huge difference. The two-hour session helped us learn balance and braking techniques, and our youngest absolutely loved it.
TIP:
Choose a rental shop close to the lifts to avoid walking in heavy boots.
Sierra Nevada Slopes: Levels and Organisation
The resort offers many kilometres of slopes, clearly marked by difficulty:
- 🟢 Green – very easy
- 🔵 Blue – easy
- 🔴 Red – difficult
- ⚫ Black – very difficult
For a one-day visit, we recommend focusing on Borreguiles (2,700 m), where:
- Ski lessons take place
- Slopes are easy and ideal for beginners
Our Experience: One Day in Sierra Nevada from Granada
Our experience was fantastic—and left us wanting more.
We stayed in Granada and initially planned to leave early due to road issues caused by a landslide. However, since our ski pass was for the afternoon, we decided to go later and avoid morning queues.
We left around 9:00 am. As we drove along the A-395 road, the scenery changed dramatically—from Granada’s urban landscape to mountain views. Halfway up, we started seeing snow, as it had snowed heavily the previous week.

We took about an hour to reach the mid-zone, where we parked without issues and walked to Pradollano.
After lunch on a sunny terrace (yes—sunbathing at a ski resort!), we built a snowman before collecting our equipment and heading up to Borreguiles for our lesson.
There, you’ll also find lockers and restaurants.

During the lesson, we quickly understood how the resort works. There are conveyor lifts for beginners, and access to these requires a ski pass. For higher slopes, you’ll need to use ski lifts.
Overall, the experience was very enjoyable, with a friendly and social atmosphere among skiers.
Where to Eat in Sierra Nevada?
You have two main options:
Restaurants in Pradollano
- Traditional Spanish restaurants
- Pizzerias
- Burger spots
- Cafés
Mountain Restaurants – Borreguiles
In the mid-zone, you’ll find panoramic restaurants perfect for a break. Prices are higher, but the views make it worthwhile.
Is It Worth Staying in Sierra Nevada?
Since we planned only one day, staying in Granada was the perfect choice. It allowed us to explore the city while enjoying the mountains.
Advantages of staying in Granada:
- More affordable accommodation
- Greater variety of restaurants and supermarkets
- Cultural experiences
However, for a longer ski trip, staying in Sierra Nevada has clear benefits:
- Direct access to the slopes
- True mountain atmosphere
- Better use of multiple ski days
⚠️ Important: If staying overnight in winter, always carry snow chains. If it snows on your departure day, driving without them may be unsafe or impossible. We also didn’t see snow chains in supermarket at Sierra Nevada.
