The Barranco do Demo Walkway provides an adventure tour in the Alferce village, next to Monchique village in Algarve, Portugal. The walkway has a suspension bridge that crosses Barranco do Demo, a deep and rocky gorge.
We heard about this walkway very recently and went to discover it. The small walkway is part of a walking trail of almost 8 miles through the corners of the Monchique mountains. However, you can choose just to visit the walkway and it is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Algarve and enjoy a small dose of adrenaline.

The walkway and the suspension bridge
The wooden walkway is 100 meters long, next to the Demo ravine. The suspension bridge is approximately 50 meters above the bottom of the gorge offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The tour is relatively easy, but there are some narrow and steep parts that can be challenging for people afraid of heights.

The Barranco do Demo Walkway, being an outdoor and unsupervised attraction, is obviously open all year round. However, knowing the climate of the Monchique mountains, we suggest the best time to visit is during spring or autumn, when the weather is milder.
Here are some tips to make the most of your walk on the Passadiço do Barranco do Demo:
- Wear comfortable and appropriate shoes for walking.
- Bring water and a snack.
- Don’t go alone.
- Be careful with children.
- Enjoy the view!

The Barranco do Demo Walkway is a great way to experience the natural beauty of the Algarve and enjoy a dose of adrenaline. If you are looking for an adventure tour, this is the place for you!
How to arrive
The Demo walkways and the suspension bridge are close to the village of Alferce. On the road from Portimão to Monchique, just follow the N267 to Alferce (it will appear on the right towards Monchique) close to Monchique.
In the village, you will find two possibilities to reach the walkways. In the first option, next to the entrance to Alferce, you will find an arrow indicating the demo walkways and you can follow this dirt path until the end. There you will find a small viewpoint and the biggest staircase (which you will go down) to the bridge.

As a second option, we suggest entering Alferce and following the signs to the cemetery. Next to this, there is a small park where you can see the walkway. To get there, after parking your car, you must follow the dirt path at the back of the cemetery and follow the arrows to the walkway.
In this second option, you won’t have to take so many stairs to get to the bridge, but you will have to walk along the dirt path.
What to do around Alferce
If you love hiking, you can follow the entire PR8MCQ trail – Pelos Caminhos de Alferce, measuring 7.8 km. ->Track file.
The Via Algarviana also passes through Alferce, a pedestrian route that runs throughout the Algarve. You can find out about some of the sections already completed by us or discover all the Via Algarviana routes on its official website.

Discover the Algarve Beyond the Tourist Trails
The Algarve is much more than its famous beaches and busy resorts. Some of its most fascinating landscapes can be found along quiet trails, through traditional villages, across rugged hills and in places that remain largely unknown to visitors.
Over the years, we have explored many of these trails ourselves and shared our experiences here on Scannertrip. From the Algarve Barrocal and the mountains of Monchique to the Ria Formosa and the wild landscapes of the Vicentine Coast, each hike has allowed us to discover a different side of the region.
Now, we would love to share these experiences with you.
