Just 10 km (6 miles) from Faro, the charming village of Estoi is one of our favourite places to escape the busy Algarve coastline. While many visitors head straight for the beaches, we discovered that Estoi offers a completely different experience, combining history, elegant architecture and peaceful gardens.
The village is home to two remarkable attractions: the Estoi Palace and the nearby Roman Ruins of Milreu. Both can easily be visited on the same trip, making Estoi one of the best day trips from Faro.
After spending a few hours exploring the palace and its gardens, we can easily understand why this is considered one of the most beautiful historical buildings in southern Portugal.
Why Visit Estoi Palace?
Unlike many Portuguese palaces, Estoi Palace combines several architectural styles, with strong influences from the Rococo period. Its elegant pink façade, beautiful staircases, colourful azulejo tiles and romantic gardens create a unique atmosphere that feels very different from anywhere else in the Algarve.
One of the things we enjoyed most was that the palace never felt crowded. Even during the tourist season, it remains a peaceful place where you can simply wander through the gardens (that is possible visit) and admire the architecture.
If you’re looking for unusual things to do near Faro, this is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
History of Estoi Palace
Construction of the palace began in the late 19th century under the orders of José Francisco da Silva, better known as the Viscount of Estoi. The project was completed in the early 20th century and soon became one of the finest aristocratic residences in the Algarve.
The palace occupies a beautiful four-hectare estate in the centre of Estoi, just a short walk from the village’s main church.
During its history, the property experienced periods of abandonment and deterioration before undergoing an extensive restoration project.
Today, the palace has been carefully preserved and now houses the luxurious Pousada Palácio de Estoi, allowing visitors to stay overnight while still enjoying access to many of its historic areas.
Exploring the Palace
Although part of the building now functions as a hotel, several of the palace’s most beautiful areas remain open to visitors.
As we walked through the palace, the first thing that caught our attention was the elegant pink exterior, followed by the impressive ceilings, decorative staircases and original architectural details that have been carefully restored.
Every room reveals a different aspect of the palace’s history, making it a fascinating place to explore even if you are not staying at the hotel.
The Beautiful Gardens
The gardens are undoubtedly the highlight of our visit.
They are arranged on several terraces connected by elegant staircases, decorated with statues, fountains and magnificent Portuguese azulejo panels. Palm trees, colourful flowers and carefully designed viewpoints make every corner feel like a perfect photo opportunity.
We spent quite some time simply walking around, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and discovering new perspectives of the palace.
For photographers, the gardens offer some of the most picturesque views in the Algarve.
But part of the garden are close and only open to some events.

Can You Visit the Palace Without Staying at the Hotel?
Yes. One of the best things about Estoi Palace is that you don’t need to be a hotel guest to enjoy some part of the property.
Visitors can freely access the gardens and several historic areas of the palace, making it an excellent stop even if you only have an hour to spare. You can also dring a tee on the coffe shop.
If you wish to experience the palace more fully, staying overnight at the Pousada is a memorable option.
How Long Do You Need?
We recommend allowing 1 to 2 hours for your visit.
This gives you enough time to explore the gardens, admire the architecture, take photographs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere without rushing.
If you also plan to visit the Roman Ruins of Milreu, allow around half a day for both attractions.
Best Time to Visit
The palace is beautiful throughout the year, but we particularly enjoyed visiting during spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasant and the gardens are at their most colourful.
Early morning and late afternoon also provide the best lighting for photography while avoiding the hottest hours of the Algarve summer.

One of the advantages of visiting Estoi is that several interesting attractions are located nearby.

How to Get to Estoi Palace
Getting to Estoi Palace is very straightforward.
The village lies just off the N2, Portugal’s famous road that crosses the country from north to south, between Faro and São Brás de Alportel.
If you’re driving, you’ll find several free parking spaces close to the parish church. From there, it’s only a short walk through the charming narrow streets to the palace gardens.
We recommend taking a few extra minutes to explore the village itself, as its traditional whitewashed houses, quiet squares and local cafés add to the overall experience.
