7 Amazing Places to Visit on Portugal’s Silver Coast (Óbidos to Peniche Road Trip)

Portugal’s Silver Coast is one of the country’s most underrated regions. Stretching between Lisbon and Coimbra, it offers medieval towns, dramatic Atlantic cliffs, beautiful lagoons, world-famous surfing beaches and charming fishing villages—all within a short driving distance.

We’ve explored this region several times and, in this itinerary, we’ll show you seven incredible places that can easily be visited over one or two days. From the medieval streets of Óbidos to the giant waves of Nazaré and the spectacular cliffs of Peniche, this route perfectly combines history, culture and nature.

Óbidos is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Portugal. Completely surrounded by ancient walls, its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses decorated with colourful flowers and imposing castle make it one of the country’s most visited destinations.

One of the highlights is walking along the medieval walls, which offer spectacular views over the village and the surrounding countryside. Inside the walls you’ll also discover charming boutiques, traditional craft shops and countless cafés serving the famous Ginjinha de Óbidos, a sour cherry liqueur traditionally served in a delicious chocolate cup.

The village was reconquered from the Moors during the 12th century and, according to local legend, a Moorish woman secretly opened the “Gate of Treason” to help Portuguese troops enter the castle. Today, however, visitors usually enter through the beautiful Porta da Vila, famous for its impressive blue-and-white azulejo panels.

Caldas da Rainha is best known for its thermal heritage and distinctive ceramic tradition. Founded around natural hot springs, the city has grown into one of Portugal’s most important artistic centres.

Begin your visit at D. Carlos I Park, a peaceful green space surrounding the historic Thermal Hospital, one of the oldest thermal hospitals in the world. The park is also home to the José Malhoa Museum, the first Portuguese museum created from a private art collection.

No visit would be complete without exploring the city’s ceramic shops. The legacy of Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro is everywhere, from his famous cabbage-shaped plates to the iconic ceramic swallows that decorate homes across Portugal.

Accommodations in Foz do Arelho and surroundings

São Martinho do Porto is famous for its almost perfectly shell-shaped bay, one of the most unique coastal landscapes in Europe.

Protected from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow natural entrance, the bay offers calm waters throughout the year, making it one of Portugal’s best beaches for families with children.

Besides relaxing on the beach, visitors can climb to the Miradouro do Largo José Bento da Silva, walk to the Santo António Lighthouse, or follow the scenic path connecting the tranquil bay with the powerful Atlantic waves outside.

No trip along Portugal’s Silver Coast would be complete without visiting Nazaré, internationally famous for the record-breaking giant waves that attract the world’s best big-wave surfers.

Although we only had enough time to visit Praia do Norte, we quickly realised that Nazaré deserves at least a full day.

Take the historic funicular up to Sítio da Nazaré, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the coastline. Here you’ll also find the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, the Memory Chapel and the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, which offers the best viewpoint over Praia do Norte and the legendary Nazaré Canyon.

Stay in Nazare

Peniche is one of Portugal’s most important fishing towns and one of Europe’s leading surfing destinations.

The historic Peniche Fortress, originally built in the 16th century, played a significant role throughout Portuguese history, including serving as a political prison during the Estado Novo dictatorship. Today it houses the city’s museum.

A short drive away lies Cabo Carvoeiro, one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the Silver Coast. Towering limestone cliffs, fascinating rock formations and uninterrupted Atlantic views make this one of the highlights of the region.

On clear days you can also admire the Berlengas Archipelago, a protected nature reserve that can be visited by boat, mainly between spring and autumn.

Located just a few kilometres north of Peniche, Baleal is one of Portugal’s most famous surfing destinations.

The village occupies a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow sandbar, creating two beautiful beaches: Baleal Norte and Baleal Sul.

Whether you’re looking to surf, relax on the beach or simply enjoy fresh seafood with ocean views, Baleal offers a laid-back atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

Its golden beaches, excellent surf conditions and breathtaking sunsets make it an ideal final stop on this Silver Coast itinerary.

One of the best things about Portugal’s Silver Coast is that many of its top attractions are located within a short driving distance of each other.

If you’re short on time, it’s possible to visit the seven destinations featured in this guide on a full-day road trip from Lisbon, although you’ll only have enough time to see the main highlights.

For a more relaxed experience, we recommend spending 2 to 3 days exploring the region. This allows you to stroll through the medieval streets of Óbidos, enjoy the beaches of Foz do Arelho and São Martinho do Porto, admire the giant waves of Nazaré, and discover the dramatic cliffs of Peniche without feeling rushed.

If you’re planning a longer holiday in Portugal, the Silver Coast also makes an excellent stop between Lisbon and Coimbra, or as part of a wider itinerary through Central Portugal.

The Silver Coast is a year-round destination, but each season offers a different experience.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times to visit. Temperatures are pleasant, flowers are in bloom and tourist attractions are far less crowded than during summer.

Summer (June to September)

Summer is ideal for enjoying the beaches and vibrant seaside atmosphere. Expect warm temperatures, lively towns and plenty of restaurants open throughout the day. However, this is also the busiest season, especially in Nazaré, Peniche and São Martinho do Porto.

Autumn (October and November)

Autumn combines mild weather with fewer visitors. It’s also the beginning of the big-wave season in Nazaré, making it a fantastic time for photography and sightseeing.

Winter (December to February)

Winter is quieter and perfect for those who enjoy dramatic coastal scenery. Although it may be too cold for swimming, it’s the best season to witness the famous giant waves of Nazaré, which can exceed 20 metres (65 feet) under the right conditions.

One of the biggest advantages of this itinerary is that the attractions are located very close to one another.

Overall, you’ll drive approximately 300 km (186 miles) if starting and finishing in Lisbon.
