Kiel
Kiel is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea in a strategic maritime area that gives the port enormous importance. In addition to goods there is also a huge cruise port.
Kiel, despite its size, is a small city in Germany. Its geographical location and canals make it an important pier for ships. In the city, the boat is also an important public transport, thus avoiding the bus.
Since we had a one-day stay that we considered too short, we suggest you take more time to get to know the city and the surrounding area better because it’s worth it.
We start visiting the train station, Hauptbahnhof, a historic building. Then we continue to Sophienhof Kiel, a shopping center connecting to a second shopping center. This is a way to travel the meters between the train station and the central shopping area, gardens, and monuments.
Walking along Holstenstraße, a shopping street, we find a group of historic buildings you should visit. Examples of these buildings are the Kiel Opera House and the Landeshauptstadt Kiel with a huge tower visible across the city.
Nearby it is located in a green area next to an arm of the canal. Hiroshimapark has two lakes and several places where you can relax.
Finally, we head towards St. Nikolai Church, which unfortunately is undergoing restoration work. This was built when the city was born, in 1242, and has undergone several works and restorations over the years.
Where to stay in Kiel?
Kiel has some choices when it comes to accommodation. Being a city where cruises depart and arrive in northern Europe, there are several hotels close to the central area, which is also the port’s location.
