Voted the best European destination in 2017, Porto (also known as Oporto) stole our hearts with its blend of tradition, culture, and stunning river views. It’s no wonder it’s one of the most visited cities in Portugal—and once you’re there, you’ll instantly know why.
We visited Porto sometimes and we love this city. This post describe our experience in the city.
A City Steeped in History and Culture
The historic center of Porto, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a true open-air museum. As you stroll through its narrow streets, you’ll feel the soul of a city that proudly holds onto its roots. Did you know the name “Portugal” actually comes from Porto’s ancient Roman name, Portus Cale?
From the vibrant Avenida dos Aliados to the Bohemian Cordoaria and the elegant Boavista district, there’s something unique around every corner. You can do these areas by foot or by bus.

Ribeira: Where the City Meets the River
One of our favorite spots was the Ribeira, a picturesque riverside district filled with restaurants, cafés, and breathtaking views of the Dom Luís I Bridge. Watching the sunset here is an experience you simply can’t miss.
Nearby landmarks include the grand Palácio da Bolsa, the beautiful São Francisco Church, and of course, the impressive Sé do Porto (Cathedral)—one of the oldest buildings in the city.
Porto’s Flavours: A Culinary Adventure
Eating in Porto is an experience in itself. Whether you’re brave enough to try the iconic francesinha (a mighty sandwich filled with meat and covered in a rich sauce), or you prefer a more traditional bacalhau dish, your taste buds are in for a treat.
And what better way to finish a meal than with a glass of authentic Port wine? Head to Vila Nova de Gaia across the river for a tour and tasting at one of the many wine cellars.
Don’t Miss: Livraria Lello
Book lovers, rejoice! Livraria Lello is one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world—and it truly lives up to the hype. With its neo-Gothic architecture, stunning staircase, and magical ambiance, it’s no surprise that it inspired J.K. Rowling while living in Porto. This is one of the most visited space in Porto. Go but you will find a queue.

Museums Worth Visiting
In our visits, we only visited the first and the second in this list. But we know that all of them will deserver a visited:
- Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art
- Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis
- Centro Português de Fotografia
- Port Wine Museum
- Tram Museum
A Different Perspective: Douro River Cruise
To see Porto from a new angle, we highly recommend a Douro River cruise. It’s a relaxing way to take in the city’s historic skyline, the beautiful bridges, and the terraced vineyards that line the hills.
