Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is a city that truly deserves a visit. With roots dating back to Roman times, it has been shaped by civilizations that left a deep mark on its architecture, culture, and identity. Walking through its streets, you can feel the weight of centuries of history blending with the city’s vibrant modern energy.
Seville is located just two hours away from Algarve, Portugal, making it an easy destination to reach from Portugal Faro Airport. But the Seville airport also have many international connections.

A Journey Through History: Seville’s Fascinating Past
Originally founded as Hispanic by the Romans, Seville flourished during the Moorish occupation (8th to 13th century), becoming one of the most important cities in Al-Andalus region. This legacy is still visible today in its architecture and gardens, especially in landmarks like the Royal Alcázar and the iconic Giralda Tower.
After the Christian Reconquista, Seville entered a new golden age—particularly in the 16th century—when it became Spain’s main trading hub with the New World. During this period, Seville was the gateway for wealth flowing in from the Americas, turning it into one of the richest cities in Europe.

Today, Seville is a captivating blend of tradition and modern life. With passionate flamenco performances, grand festivals like Semana Santa and Feria de Abril, and charming neighbourhoods like Triana and Santa Cruz, with their narrow streets that provide shelter from the sun, the city continues to enchant visitors from around the globe. It’s also a dynamic cultural hub, filled with museums, theatres, and a culinary scene that reflects its rich heritage.
As Algarve residents, we’ve visited this vibrant city many times—whether for shopping, concerts, or quick getaways—and we always discover something new. To explore its main monuments at a relaxed pace, we recommend a minimum stay of two days. If you’d like to visit the Isla Mágica theme park as well, add an extra day.
Exploring Seville: A Blend of Old and New
Seville offers a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity. From the enchanting districts of Santa Cruz and Triana to world-famous festivals like Semana Santa and the Seville Fair, the city knows how to celebrate life.
As frequent visitors from the Algarve, we’ve explored Seville for shopping, concerts, and weekend getaways. And each time, we discover something new. For first-time visitors, we recommend staying at least 2 days, or 3 if you plan to visit Isla Mágica.
Top Things to Do in Seville
Seville is a large city with an abundance of attractions—from museums dedicated to Andalusian dress and music to amusement parks. Each time we visit the city centre, it feels like there’s always more to see. Here are our top highlights for your trip:
Visit Seville Cathedral and Climb La Giralda
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Seville’s cathedral is one of the largest in the world. It impresses not only with its size but also with its majestic Gothic architecture. Inside lies the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Climb the Giralda, the former minaret, for a stunning panoramic view of the city.

Real Alcázar of Seville
Just next to the cathedral, this Moorish palace dazzles with its intricate tile work and lush gardens—an architectural treasure that tells centuries of stories.

Experience Las Setas (Metropol Parasol)
This bold, modern structure right in the heart of the city offers a dramatic contrast to its historic surroundings. Below, you’ll find a market and a museum, but the real attraction is the walk along the top platform, with sweeping views over Seville.

Relax in Plaza de España and María Luisa Park
Perhaps Seville’s most iconic square, located next to a vast park. Horse-drawn carriages and row boats bring charm to this semicircular plaza, which beautifully blends Renaissance and Moorish architecture. Admire the colourful ceramic tile benches representing every Spanish province.
(The building was not open to the public during our visits.)
Don’t miss a stroll through the Maria Luisa Park, right next to the Plaza de España.

Explore the Santa Cruz Quarter
One of several historic quarters in the heart of the city. Whether you explore Santa Cruz near the cathedral or the neighbouring districts, you’ll enjoy lively, narrow streets full of charm and traditional restaurants.
Stroll Along the Guadalquivir River
Join the locals in a scenic walk along the river, from Puente de Isabel II to Puente de los Remedios. Take in the views across the water or watch rowers training on this calm stretch of the river.

Have Fun at Isla Mágica Theme Park
The largest theme park in Seville and the surrounding region, Isla Mágica is located on the former Expo 1992 grounds, which are still partially unused. Open most of the year, the park offers attractions for all ages. We especially appreciate the water-based rides that provide much-needed relief from Seville’s intense summer heat.
What to Eat in Seville: A Local Food Guide
Seville is a culinary paradise. From authentic Spanish cuisine to international flavours, there’s something for everyone. Typical local restaurants often serve:
- Tortillas: Delicious Spanish omelettes made with eggs and fried potatoes—sometimes with shrimp or other ingredients.
- Gazpacho ou Salmorejo: Cold soups perfect for Andalusia’s warm climate.
- Tapas: A must in Spain! These small plates let you try a variety of dishes like jamón ibérico, patatas bravas, or boquerones en vinagre.
- For dessert—or even breakfast—try churros with hot chocolate.
Where to Stay in Seville
Seville is essentially divided in two by the river. If you want to stay close to the city’s main landmarks, opt for accommodation in the historic centre. The Triana neighbourhood is full of character and also close to the action. We recommend Hotel Ribera de Triana, located right on the riverbank.
Getting to Seville
Seville is well-connected to the rest of Spain and beyond. Here’s how to get there:
- By Plane: Seville Airport (SVQ) has international connections and is just 15 minutes from the city centre.
- By Train: Santa Justa Station offers high-speed trains to Madrid, Córdoba, and other major cities.
- By Car: A great option for those visiting from Portugal or exploring Andalusia. The city is well connected to Granada, Málaga, Cádiz, and Huelva by road.

Perfect 3-Day Seville Itinerary
To truly experience Seville, we recommend at least 3 days. Living nearby, we’ve done shorter trips, but there’s always more to discover. Here’s a suggested itinerary:
- Day 1: Cathedral, Royal Alcázar, and Santa Cruz district.
- Day 2: Plaza de España, María Luisa Park, and Las Setas.
- Day 3: Riverfront walk and Isla Mágica
When to Visit Seville
There’s one season when you may want to avoid Seville: summer. Temperatures often soar above 30°C (86°F), making sightseeing difficult. We suggest visiting during milder months. If you can, plan your trip during Semana Santa (Holy Week) or the Seville Fair for a truly immersive experience.
