These were some of our first impressions when we started discovering more about Cape Verde and Sal Island. Just a few hours’ flight from Portugal, this Atlantic island has become increasingly popular with European travellers looking for sunshine, warm weather, golden beaches and a genuinely welcoming culture.

Sal is the kind of destination that immediately makes us think about holidays, relaxation and long days by the sea. But there is much more to the island than simply staying at an all-inclusive resort.

From floating in a volcanic salt crater to walking through shallow waters surrounded by sharks, watching fishermen bring their catch ashore in Santa Maria or seeing the famous Blue Eye at Buracona, there are plenty of things to do in Sal Island.

In this guide, we share the places and experiences that caught our attention, together with some practical tips to help you plan your trip.

Although Sal is particularly well known as a beach and relaxation destination, the island offers a surprisingly varied collection of experiences. If you are planning a trip to Cape Verde, these are five places and activities we would definitely include in our itinerary.

1. Float in the Salt Pans of Pedra de Lume

Imagine floating effortlessly inside the crater of an extinct volcano. That is exactly the kind of experience you can have at Pedra de Lume Salt Crater, one of the most unusual places to visit on Sal Island.

The water has an extremely high salt concentration, making it possible to float with very little effort. The experience is often compared with floating in the Dead Sea.

Beyond the unusual experience itself, the location is fascinating. The salt pans occupy the crater of an ancient volcano, creating a landscape that feels completely different from the beaches and resorts elsewhere on the island.

2. Discover Santa Maria Beach and its Famous Pier

If there is one place that represents Sal Island, it is probably Santa Maria Beach. This enormous stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear water is where many of the island’s hotels and resorts are concentrated. The water is wonderfully inviting, and it is very easy to understand why Santa Maria has become one of the most popular places to stay in Cape Verde.

But there is another place we would not miss: the Santa Maria Pier.

The pier becomes particularly interesting in the morning, when local fishermen return with their catch. It is a great opportunity to see a completely different side of the island and observe part of everyday life in Cape Verde.

The colourful boats, the fishermen, the freshly caught fish and the surrounding turquoise water also make this one of the best places on the island for photography.

If you enjoy discovering destinations beyond the typical tourist experience, make sure you visit the pier early in the day.

3. See the Famous “Blue Eye” at Buracona

Buracona is another fascinating place to add to your Sal Island itinerary.

Here, volcanic rock has created a natural pool and a series of caves along the coastline. But the main attraction is the famous “Blue Eye”.

When sunlight enters the cave at the right angle, it creates an extraordinary turquoise-blue reflection that looks like a giant eye. The effect is particularly impressive around the middle of the day, when the sunlight reaches the cave at the right angle.

It is one of those natural phenomena that can be difficult to appreciate in photographs until you see it in person.

4. Walk Among Sharks at Shark Bay

This is probably one of the most unusual experiences you can have in Sal. At Shark Bay, visitors can enter the shallow water and watch small lemon sharks swimming around them.

At first, the idea of walking through the water with sharks may sound slightly frightening! However, the lemon sharks found here are generally considered harmless to humans, and the experience is carried out in shallow water.

It is an experience that combines nature and a little bit of adrenaline, making it particularly memorable.

5. Watch the Action at Kite Beach

Sal Island is internationally known for its excellent conditions for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

One of the places where you can really feel this atmosphere is Kite Beach.

Even if, like us, you are not an experienced water-sports enthusiast, it is worth stopping here simply to watch the action.

Depending on the conditions, the beach can become a spectacular scene, with colourful kites filling the sky and experienced riders taking advantage of the wind and waves.

Planning a trip to Cape Verde is relatively straightforward, but there are a few things worth knowing before you go.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sal Island?

One of the great advantages of Sal Island is its warm climate throughout most of the year. However, the conditions can vary depending on what you want to do.

• November to April – the windier season

This period is particularly popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers. Temperatures are generally pleasant, although the wind can be quite strong.

• May to October – warmer and calmer

During these months, temperatures are generally higher and the wind tends to be less intense. For travellers mainly looking for beaches, swimming and relaxing holidays, this can be a particularly appealing period.

In other words, the best time to visit Sal depends largely on the type of holiday you are looking for.

One of the things we always enjoy when travelling is discovering the local food, and Cape Verdean cuisine is no exception.

The country’s gastronomy combines African and Portuguese influences, with fish and seafood playing an important role.

There are several dishes and drinks worth trying during your stay.

• Cachupa: You cannot talk about Cape Verdean cuisine without mentioning cachupa. Often considered the country’s national dish, cachupa is traditionally prepared with corn, beans, vegetables and, depending on the recipe, meat or fish.
• Fresh Fish and Seafood: Being an island, it comes as no surprise that fish and seafood are an important part of the local cuisine.
• What to Drink in Cape Verde: If you want to try something local, look out for Strela, the Cape Verdean beer. For something stronger, you can try grogue, a traditional sugar-cane spirit, or ponche, a sweet local drink traditionally made with grogue.

Most of the island’s tourist accommodation is concentrated around Santa Maria, and for many visitors this is the most convenient place to stay. You will find everything from large all-inclusive resorts to smaller hotels and guesthouses.

• All-Inclusive Resorts: If your idea of a holiday is to switch off completely, enjoy the beach and have everything available in one place, an all-inclusive resort can be a very convenient option. Large hotel groups such as RIU, Meliá and Robinson have resorts in the Santa Maria area, many of them close to the beach.

• Hotels and Guesthouses in Santa Maria: For a different experience, staying in a smaller hotel or guesthouse in Santa Maria allows you to be closer to the village, its restaurants, bars and local atmosphere. Places such as Odjo d’Água and Hotel Morabeza are among the better-known names in Santa Maria and have a long connection with tourism on the island.

For us, Sal Island is not simply a beach destination. It is a state of mind. The combination of warm weather, long sandy beaches, turquoise water and the relaxed “No Stress” philosophy creates an atmosphere that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

But what makes Cape Verde particularly interesting is the people and the culture.The friendliness of the Cape Verdean people, the sound of morna music in the streets and bars of Santa Maria and the slower pace of life all contribute to the feeling that you have genuinely escaped from your everyday routine.
