Right in the centre of Portugal, there is a walkway with a spectacular viewpoint and a river beach waiting to be visited. The footbridge and viewpoint of Fragas de São Simão are located between Figueiró dos Vinhos and Avelar.
The complete walkway is approximately 2miles long and connects the schist village of Casal de São Simão to the Fragas de São Simão viewpoint, on the other side of the Fragas de São Simão River Beach.

Fragas de São Simão is an imposing rocky area, which was torn by the waters of the Ribeira de Alge, thus creating a small Gorge, an area with small rapids and where the River Beach is located, immense vegetation and living areas and paths to walk.

Fragas de São Simão Route
Fragas de São Simão Route Location
The village of Casal de São Simão is located in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, very close to the IC8, approximately 40 km from Coimbra and 180 km from Lisbon.
It should be noted that the route is not extensive, but there are a large number of stairs that increase the degree of difficulty. We parked next to the Fragas de São Simão viewpoint, where we started by observing the viewpoint and the entire landscape of Fragas. It is also possible to park and start the trail near the village of Casal de São Simão.
Fragas de São Simão walkway and the fluvial beach
Having started near the viewpoint, the route is made down the stairs towards Fluvial Beach. This is one of the most emblematic points and when done going up, it costs much more than going down.
Next to the stream, the terrain is less inclined, but the vegetation is exuberant. Here you can walk along the banks of the stream, cross the metal bridge and start the second part of the route, going up towards the village.

When to visit the walkway trail
The walkway can be visited throughout the year. During spring and especially summer you can enjoy the river beach and the waters of the stream (if it has enough water).

However, during the winter you can see the small rapids formed by the waters and rocks, but the disadvantage is that you will not feel like going for a swim. It should be noted that some areas of the route may be flooded during the rainy season.
