Nestled on the shores of the Baltic Sea, Estonia is a captivating blend of medieval charm, untouched nature, and modern innovation. From the fairy-tale streets of Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town to the serene beauty of its countless islands and forests, this small but vibrant nation promises an unforgettable adventure.
Estonia is still unknown and certainly not one of the main places you should have on your bucket list. However, it is a beautiful country, one of the smallest in Europe, with a good quality of life, excellent ability to welcome tourists and they are quite fluent in languages such as English.
We visited this country and visited two cities, Tallinn and Tartu. This is our experience.
Estonia
Estonia is one of three Baltic nations, including Latvia and Lithuania. It is the most northern of Europe, bordering Russia and Latvia and bathed to the north by the Gulf of Finland. Estonia is also a country that surprised us with the modernization process in which it is due to its troubled past and stable present. During its history, Estonia was already dominated by Danes, Swedes and Russians. It was an independent republic from 1918 and later was invaded by Germany and at the end of the war, incorporated into the Soviet Union. It was only in 1991 that they became independent and became a member of the European Union in 2004. It is a country that is part of the Schengen Area and has adopted the Euro.

Travel to and in Estónia
One of the advantages of visiting Estonia and its capital, Tallinn, is its proximity to other European capitals, such as Helsinki, in Finland, which is a short ferry crossing, and Riga, in Latvia. The capital is still very close to St. Petersburg, in Russia.
Our trip to Estonia allowed me to visit Tallinn and then the second-largest city, Tartu. To Tallinn, we went by plane. Between Tallinn and Tartu, we travelled by bus. The experience was excellent with the two companies: Air Baltic airline and LuxExpress bus company. On the bus, we had access to free Wi-Fi, individual tablets with films and documentaries in several languages , and even first-class.
Estonia is a member of the Schengen area. The population speaks mainly Estonian and Russian, but English is a very fluent language. Health care is good, and citizens of the European Union can be accompanied by European health insurance cards or health insurance.
When we recommend to visit
Estonia is a country where green and nature still abounds and all cities are relatively small compared to the rest of Europe. The average temperatures in spring and summer are relatively pleasant (between 10º and 22º). In autumn and winter, temperatures are lower around 0°. Due to its geographic position in the summer, the days have many hours of sun but in the winter is the opposite.

Geography
Estonia is a relatively small country (45,000 square km) with 1,500 islands located in the Baltic Sea. It’s a flat country with lots of forest and many lakes. The highest “mountain” in the country has eight of 318 meters above sea level. The largest lake in the country is called Peipsi and is located on the border with Russia.

Tallinn
The capital Tallinn, for us, is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe and its historic centre has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not a very big city so one or two days will be enough to visit all its sights. The historical centre is located inside the medieval walls that remain well preserved with its pointed roofs, and the old elevation systems in the facades of the houses that are also ornamented. In the central square, visit the church tower to contemplate all the splendour of this city and observe the Baltic and also the port where are cruises anchored.

In this post, you can find more about our experience in Tallinn.
Tartu
Tartu is the second-largest city in Estonia. In the city is located the most important university in the country. Tartu is also a small town that is quickly explored. It is divided by a river and on its banks are several gardens and walkways where the Estonians at the end of the day take the opportunity to be with friends and dance, relax or enjoy a drink in the bars.
In terms of culture, the city is quite rich because have several museums such as the huge Estonian National Museum, Olympic Museum and AHHAA Science Center.
