Some places don’t quite feel real — and Plitvice Lakes National Park is definitely one of them. If you’re planning a trip to Croatia and wondering whether it deserves a full day on your itinerary, the short answer is: absolutely.
I still remember that first impression vividly: the constant sound of cascading water, the scent of damp forest air, and the almost surreal turquoise-green colour of the lakes. It looks filtered… but it’s completely natural.
We visited as part of our Croatia road trip. We already knew it would be beautiful, but it’s far more than just a “pretty park”. We left saying: “This is one of those places you simply have to see at least once in your lifetime.”

In this article, I’ll explain how to get there, the best routes inside the park, what it was like walking along the wooden boardwalks, and how to organise your visit to make the most of your time.
🚗 How to Get to Plitvice Lakes National Park
Plitvice Lakes are located roughly halfway between Zagreb and Zadar, making them a very popular stop on any Croatia road trip itinerary.
By Car (the most practical option)
This is the option we chose. Roads in Croatia are in excellent condition, and the park is well signposted. From the A1 motorway, there’s a specific exit (via the D522 road) that leads directly towards the lakes area.
- Zagreb → Plitvice: approx. 2 hours
- Zadar → Plitvice: approx. 1h30–2 hours
- Split → Plitvice: approx. 2h30–3 hours
We drove from Split and, to make the most of our full day in the park, decided to stay overnight in a nearby village.

The park has two main entrances:
- Entrance 1 – Lower Lakes side, with dramatic canyon views and access to the Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap).
- Entrance 2 – Upper Lakes side, quieter areas and lush green landscapes.
We entered through Entrance 2 because we wanted to begin with that immediate “wow” moment overlooking the lakes.
By Bus
If you’re not doing a road trip or staying nearby, it’s still very easy to reach the park by bus.
There are frequent connections from Zagreb, Zadar, Split and other tourist cities. Buses stop along the main road near the park entrances.
Whether you’re arriving by car or bus, it’s essential to buy tickets in advance on the official website — especially during high season. Visitor numbers are limited, and you must select a specific entry time when booking.
Organised Tours
Given its popularity, many agencies offer day trips to Plitvice Lakes from:
- Zagreb
- Zadar
- Split
This is a stress-free option if you prefer not to worry about driving, parking or booking tickets.
🎟️ Tickets & Visit Planning
he park has a daily visitor cap, so planning is crucial.
- Book online in advance (especially May–September).
- Choose your entry time carefully (early morning is ideal — more time to explore and softer light for photos).
We monitored ticket availability online for our chosen day and time and booked about two weeks in advance.
Your ticket includes:
- Access to all walking trails
- Electric boat rides across the lakes (to shorten walking sections)
- Panoramic shuttle/train connecting the end of routes to both entrances
Initially, I was slightly confused during the booking process, thinking that choosing one entrance might limit access to certain areas. That’s not the case — one ticket gives you access to the entire park.
Entrance 1 is roughly in the middle of the park (convenient if you’re short on time). Entrance 2 is further from the final sections.
If you start at Entrance 2, you can still visit the Lower Lakes. If you start at Entrance 1, you can also reach the Upper Lakes.

🗺️ How the Routes Work in Plitvice Lakes National Park
The park is extremely well organised, with clearly marked routes identified by letters: A, B, C, E, F, H and K.
- Routes A, B and F focus on the Lower Lakes.
- Route E focuses on the Upper Lakes.
- Routes C, H, K1 and K2 combine both sections.
Your choice depends on:
- How many hours do you have
- Your fitness level
- Which entrance are you using
Below is a practical summary.

🚶♀️ Rotas a partir da Entrance 1 (Lagos Inferiores)
🔹 Route A – The Essentials of the Lower Lakes
- Duration: 2–3 hours
- Distance: 3.5 km
- Includes: Lower Lakes + Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap)
- Transport: No boat or shuttle required
Perfect if you:
- Want a short introduction to the park
- Have limited time

🔹 Route B – Lower Lakes + Boat on Lake Kozjak
- Duration: 3–4 hours
- Distance: 4 km
- Includes: Lower Lakes + boat ride on Lake Kozjak
- Transport: Long boat ride P3–P2 and then P1
Similar to Route A, but enhanced by a peaceful electric boat ride — making the experience more complete and relaxing.

🔹 Route C – Our Favourite (Lower + Upper Lakes)
- Duration: 4–6 hours
- Distance: 8 km
- Includes: Lower and Upper Lakes
- Transport: Boat + shuttle
This is the route we did — and it took us almost the whole day, with plenty of time to stop, photograph, listen to the water and simply take it all in.
You begin in the Lower Lakes, continue by boat across Lake Kozjak, then explore the Upper Lakes area with wooden walkways weaving through waterfalls and dense forest. The shuttle at the end shortens the return.
If you have a full day, this offers the best balance between effort and reward.

🔹 Rota K (K1) – The Trail Lover’s Marathon
- Duration: 6–8 hours
- Distance: 17 km
- Includes: Lower + Upper Lakes, including quieter sections
- Transport: Mostly walking, short boat section between P2 and P1

- Have good stamina
This route feels more like a true nature hike, with forest sections, elevated viewpoints and far fewer crowds.

If you enter via Entrance 2, you’re closer to the Upper Lakes.
🔹 Route E – Focus on the Upper Lakes
- Duration: 2–3 hours
- Distance: 5.1 km

- Transport: Shuttle + boat between P1 and P2
Ideal if you:
- Want to avoid the busier Lower Lakes
- Love layered waterfalls and photogenic boardwalks

🔹 Route F – Variant Option
Similar to Route B but starting from Entrance 2, combining boat and shuttle transport with a focus on the Lower Lakes. A good choice if you’re staying near this entrance.
🔹 Route H – Extended Version
- Duration: 4–6 hours
- Distance: approx. 8–9 km
Combines Upper and Lower Lakes starting from Entrance 2.

🌿 Our Experience at Plitvice Lakes National Park
When planning our Croatia itinerary, we dedicated a full day to the park — and that was absolutely the right decision.
We arrived early and did the following:
- Entered through Entrance 1
- Admired the panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Lower Lakes
- Descended to the wooden boardwalks, where the water flows literally at your feet
- Took the silent electric boat across Lake Kozjak
- Continued through the Upper Lakes, surrounded by countless small streams and waterfalls
What struck me most was the shifting shades of blue and green. The colour changed depending on light, algae and depth. At times, it genuinely looked like live Photoshop — but it’s all natural.
📸 Suggested 1-Day Itinerary in Plitvice Lakes
If you’re visiting for one day, with your own transport and accommodation nearby, here’s a practical plan:
Morning
- Enter via Entrance 1
- Follow Route C, starting with the Lower Lakes
- Visit Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall) — one of the highlights
Midday
- Lunch/snack break in designated areas (we stopped near Pier 3)
- Cross Lake Kozjak by boat
Afternoon
- Explore the Upper Lakes at a relaxed pace
- Take the panoramic shuttle back
On your way out, consider stopping in the charming village of Rastoke. It features picturesque waterfalls, traditional houses and, in summer, even a small river beach — a perfect way to end the day.

🥾 Practical Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit
- Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll walk on wood, stone and dirt (some boardwalks can be slippery).
- Arrive early for fewer crowds and better light.
- Bring water and snacks (there are cafés, but only in a few locations).
- Stay on the marked paths — the ecosystem is fragile and must be protected.
