San Juan de Gaztelugatxe – chapel that defies the sea

On the coast of Biscay, near Bilbao, in a zone of rocky coast and with small beaches almost deserted and unknown is this small chapel that already was part of the scenes of the Game of Thrones. It is a very beautiful place, surrounded by some mysticism and nature that characterizes this part of Spain. I visited this place on a trip to Bilbao and dist only 35 km.

The chapel, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, is located about 150 meters above sea level. The connecting to the small island to land it’s made with a stone bridge and to reach the chapel is necessary to climb 241 steps. From the parking lot until you get to start to glimpse to the chapel is also necessary a small walk by a trail in very good condition.

The chapel for its beauty and mysticism was already famous. However after appearing in the Game of Thrones began to receive an avalanche of visitors. From the information i collected on the Basque Tourism webpage at the time i publish this article is necessary to reserve the visit, although this is free. The current chapel is not the original since, similar to many of these monuments, it has already undergone several fires, battles and invassions. It was a convent and also served as a fortress to help in the defense of the coast. Nowadays it is worshiped by the fishermen and inside it keeps several offerings related to boats that almost shipwrecked.
