This 24-meter Vigário Waterfall continues to be a pleasant and refreshing place in the Algarve inland and is one of the places to have on your bucket list when visiting the Algarve.
Map
The waterfall is located in the village of Alte, close to its cemetery, with parking and a very steep but cemented access when its is more necessary.
The waterfall
The once wild waterfall underwent intervention for years to improve access, picnic tables and a grass field where visitors could lay their towels. Unfortunately, this is the least beautiful part, all the facilities are abandoned except the grass field and the waterfall itself.
Another aspect to keep in mind is that the waterfall does not always have water, as it is fed by the Alte small stream, which is born in Freixo Farm and in years of little rainfall it will dry early.
Apart from these aspects, the waterfall is an incredible place in the Algarve inland, where the waterfalls are on a huge crystalline lake. In addition, the grass allows you to enjoy, not only the water but also the sun and the heat of the inland. The area, very low is protected from the wind.
While walking through Alte village, discover the small fountain area on the other side of the village. It is an arranged area that during the summer becomes a natural pool or river beach.
When visit?
The Vigario waterfall is already well known and on hot days it is very busy. With that in mind and if you want to enjoy the waterfall and also the quiet area where it is located, choose a sweltering spring day. Also keeps in mind that it may be dry if you choose to visit in late summer.
How to arrive?
Access to the waterfall is currently via wooden stairs.
Alte village is located 25 km from Loulé or 22 km from Albufeira. The easiest way to get there will be by using a car, but it can also be done by EVA buses.
Activities in Alte village and surroundings
Visitors can also swim in a small river beach formed by two springs. The Fonte Grande site, inside the village, forms a mirror of water, ideal for cooling off during the hottest days. There is also a picnic area on site.
